T. Col. Jean Pierre Scherman

Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Jean Pierre Scherman joined the South African Defence Force on 7 January 1993 as a national serviceman. After completing his obligatory one year national service at the School of Armour, where he qualified as a Light Armoured Car Troop Sergeant, he decided to join the Permanant Force. He was posted to 1 Special Service Battalion, a regular armoured car regiment in which he was commissioned as an officer in 1995. He continued to serve within the South African Armoured Corps in both armoured car and main battle tank regiments as a troop and squadron commander. In 2003 he was posted to the School of Armour as a senior officer instructor and promoted to the rank of major. He served in the unit for 18 years as a training branch commander and as a training wing commander. He has deployed on active service to numerous southern African and central African countries including Lesotho, Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a member of both the Southern African Development Community and the United Nations. In 2020 he was transferred to the South African Military Academy as a Military University Educator with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He holds a Masters Degree in History from the University of the Free State and a PhD in Military Science (Military History) from Stellenbosch University. He is currently staffed in the Department of Military History, School of Security and Africa Studies, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University as a full time university lecturer specialising in South African military history of the 20th and 21st centuries.
